Bravo Art Gala Spheres
The Challenge
Murgaman Art and Fabrication was contracted to create 15 spheres to be a display piece for the Bravo Art Gala in Des Moines, IA.
My Role & Process
The project was a great challenge as my dad (Steve) and I had to figure out how to consistently build 3 different-sized sets of 5 spheres ranging from 5 to 15ft in diameter. We started with very long, thin aluminum rods, and ran them through rollers at set intervals in order to achieve the appropriate diameter for each group.
Solution
We determined aluminum would have the best combination of weight and strength since they needed to be suspended above the dance floor. It ended up being incredibly lightweight and clean, and had the added benefit of retaining it's beautiful metalic shine in order to reflect the RGB lights.

Results & Impact
The final result was an incredible centerpiece on the ceiling, illuminated by a rotating set of RGB lights. Combined with the lights and the fog from the stage show, it created a dynamic art installation and talking point for the evening.
What I learned
I learned a great deal about welding aluminum. It was much different than the previous welding projects dealing with steel. Working through these new processes developed patience and a greater appreciation for welding.
